Which started with popping up Mario characters, but quickly turn into a time based clicking game.

It even had a High Scoring system that (while the game was still open) would remember your current best at the end of each game, you could try and top your score.

How to play:

Click on the hiding Mario characters to add extra time to the counting down timer. There are Goodie and Badie characters so you had to identify and think before you clicked or else you would get a time penalty if you clicked on a good character!

Chapter 2: Love The Pirate! Damn The Privateers!

The technology field has changed tremendously over the last 20 years and unfortunately it has become focused almost entirely on profiteering and fame. We see companies running technology conferences for profit, selling FUD in metric fuck tons, and making zealots out of noobs. Conmen jump from one “hot tech” to the next in order to be the first to sell this week’s “new deal”. It started with Java and the marketing engine that pushed it into the limelight, shadowing all else, thrived in the .NET ecosphere, and came full circle to the “hackers” with the rise of Rails. The world of software development has seemed to shift from developing to better mankind to a slow, but strong bleeding of developers. This is not the way of sustainable craftsmanship within Computer Science. We must turn this trend back. We, the crowd gathered here and those watching from home, we, the interested, we… JSConf… have a responsibility to ourselves to turn this tide. We are the people who can identify the conmen, the bad actors, the manipulators and we are the ones that have to call them out. Yes, it won’t be pretty and yes they will fight, but fuck it – we are pirates.

This is the first flash project i used Caurina Tweener which lead to a my love of jQuery syntax. The Tweener allowed me to experiment with the UI style of an old school VHS player to create more interaction with the selecting and playing a video.

Something i noticed about the UX is there is no buffer pause and the video starts playing right away with no lag or loading! FTW

“Why didn’t anyone think of that before? It’s so stupid, it’s positively brilliant!”

Has anyone else had a problem of wanting to use a VAR outside of the function they are associated with? Yeah didn’t think so!

I had to do such a thing my last job, i had to wait for the dom to load the get .height() value and then use it later if needed via jQuery address!

So here is what i came up with, a little bit of code that could help you if you do need to do such a stupid thing as well!

The code:

<script type="text/javascript">

backdoor(info, news, forms, reports, articles, otherschol);
// Pass the functions out via a functions parameters

}); // End of function that holds the vars

var newVars = []; // declare and empty array

function backdoor(one, two, three, four, five, six){

	newVars = [one, two, three, four, five, six];
	// Push the vars out of the parameters into the array to be used again!

}
</script>

So ive been building my folio for a little while now, all sleek jQuery animations that would resemble the animation of a Flash website. But of course the main problem with Flash is there is no jumping to a page via a URL (unless you set up SWF Address, even then you still have to load the whole Flash file), you have to actually manually go there and select the page you want.

So i set out on finding the jQuery version of SWF Address. Considering how easy SWF Address was i figured there must be an even easier jQuery version right, its a native web language it should be easier… WRONG! So after alot of messing around with sample code provided by the plugin creators, i created a switch statement that would fire off functions depending on the URL.

So now i can send someone a link and it will load up my folio on the website by using the URL “http://splatdesigns.com.au/#/portfolio”.

This also mean that once you start using the website you can use the Forward and Back buttons of your browser to animate forwards and backwards through the site!

w00t!

Check it out

The sweet little code behind the it:

<script type="text/javascript" src="jquery-1.3.2.min.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="jquery.address-1.1.min.js"></script>
<script type="text/javascript">

// switch for action
var log = function(msg) {

switch (msg)
{
case "/about":

	$('.log').animate( {width:"400px", height:"500px", }, 1000 );

break;
case "/portfolio":

	$('.log').animate( {width:"900px", height:"500px", }, 1000 );

break;
case "/contact":

	$('.log').animate( {width:"800px", height:"500px", }, 1000 );

break;
case "/":

	$('.log').animate( {width:"10px", height:"500px", }, 1000 );

break;

default:

}

}

// Event handlers
$.address.init(function(event) {

log('init: ' + event.value);
}).change(function(event) {

log('change: ' + event.value);

var text = (event.value == '/') ? 'Home' :
event.pathNames[0].substr(0, 1).toUpperCase() +
event.pathNames[0].substr(1);

}).internalChange(function(event) {

log(event.value);
}).externalChange(function(event) {
log(event.value);
});

</script>

Dont you hate it how Flash Website always have the best effects yet HTML seems to be so bland even with jQuery. Well, now you can have stylish looking fade in/outs when people navigate your website with jQuery HTML Fader. jQuery HTML Fader is a simple plugin used to get your website to fade in on load and fade out when a link is clicked.

JQuery fader does not “fade out” when just any link is clicked (as you may be using shadowbox or another type of Javascript). All links with the class of “fader” will start the fading effect.

To implement jQuery HTML Fader, copy and paste the Fader script into you head (as well as an up to date version of jQuery) and then give all you links you want to use the script to have a class of “fader” and your done.

Usage example:

<a href="http://example.com" class=”fader">Click here</a>

The script:

<script type="text/javascript" src="jquery.min.js"></script>

<script type="text/javascript">

$(document).ready(function(){

$("body").fadeOut(0, function(){ // Instantly changes the html body to 0% opacity on load

$("body").fadeIn(1000); // Fade the body to 100% opacity (change for slow/longer fade in)
});

$("a.fader").click(function(){ // Checks if the link has a class of “fader”
var url = $(this).attr('href'); // Saves the link of the clicked link.
$("html").fadeOut(1000, function(){ window.location.href=url });
// Fade the body to 0% opacity (change this for slow/longer fade in),
// then on complete it go to the original address of the link.

return false; //cancels the link original functionality

})
});
</script>
